Bulamagi Improved Cook Stove Projects based in Iganga

Kole is a largely rural district in which local people typically use wood fuel on inefficient three stone fires to purify their drinking, cleaning and washing water.  This process results in the release of greenhouse gas emissions from the combustion of wood - this can be avoided if a technology that does not require fuel (wood or fossil) supplies clean water desired by households.  

co2balance gets funding for this project by marketing the anticipated carbon credits from the wood savings to ethical investors, so borehole owners must agree to transfer the emissions reductions over to co2balance in return for them supplying the work to renovate the boreholes.  This project will be developed under the Gold Standard carbon credit body, which in addition to checking that the carbon credits from this project are real, also measures local social, environmental and economical impact.

This group of microscale VPAs will involve the maintenance of hand-pumped boreholes owned by communities in Otuke, Alebtong and Dokolo Districts, Uganda. These boreholes are in rural districts where local people use wood on inefficient three stone fires to purify their drinking, cleaning and washing water.

These VPAs have the capacity to create a network of functioning boreholes throughout the country, based on rehabilitating 30 boreholes, according to the 30,000T limit.

This project will support the provision of safe water using borehole technology to hundreds of households within Otuke district. By providing safe water, the project will ensure that households consume less firewood during the process of water purification and as a result there shall be a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from the combustion process.
